How pickleball grew in Washington, DC
Written by Jeff Fugitt, CourtSource
Pickleball came slowly to Washington, DC, both before and after the pandemic. The city is far from the sport’s birthplace, and local bureaucracy slowed things down. In 2018, local players quietly lined courts on a stretch of unused roadway near Garfield Park, creating the area’s first public pickleball spot. The pandemic packed those courts as the sport took off. After more than three years of permits, negotiations with city agencies and neighborhood commissions, and fundraising, the makeshift courts became the Robert M. Krughoff Pickleball Center, with 5 dedicated courts.
