Pickleball in Wichita: a short history

Wichita emerged as one of the thriving pickleball growth centers of the Midwest. Local pickleball pros Matt Wright and Lucy Kovalova launched their careers in 2016. Chicken N Pickle opened its Wichita location in 2019. Shortly after the opening, Jay Devilliers joined the company as the director of pickleball at the Wichita location, and he soon joined the professional pickleball ranks. Similar to most markets, Wichita experienced strong demand for courts during the pandemic. In 2023 the city council approved $6 million for a public pickleball complex at South Lakes Park, though the project was later put on hold. Wichita State University opened new courts in April 2025. These courts supplement other municipal courts, the YMCA, and clubs like Chicken N Pickle, Flight Club 316, and TapNPaddles.
Wichita's growth mirrors the national boom. According to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, about 24.3 million Americans played pickleball in 2025, up 22.8% from 2024 and up 171.8% over three years. Roughly 4.5 million of those players were new to the sport in 2025. Locally, the demand shows up in how venues have changed. The Greater Wichita YMCA turned its West Y gym into the Y's first courts dedicated to pickleball, and the new Wichita State courts replaced a set first added in 2021.
